James reacted to his breakfast cereal yesterday. He was down to the last couple bites when I glanced at him and something about his face made me ask if he was having a reaction - yep. Grabbed his ventolin, gave him an antihistamine and waited. Whew, the swelling in his throat went down, his breathing stabilized and he was okay the rest of the day. Man, that's scary. Not quite as scary at 16 as it was in past years but that's because he can tell me how he's feeling now, unlike when he was a baby struggling to breathe. Btw, I'm not a terrible mom, he insisted that he has had Honey Nut Cheerios before at his dad's and that almonds are not one of the nuts he is allergic to. Wrong.
The "big eight" are: Milk allergy, Egg allergy, Peanut allergy, Tree nut allergy, Seafood allergy, Shellfish allergy, Soy allergy, and Wheat allergy. Of those, James is allergic to peanuts (all legumes actually), tree nuts (confirmed even in his mind now), seafood, shellfish & soy. He had a reaction to eggs as a toddler, almost all of the boys in my family do when they're younger but they grow out of it. So, he's got five out of the eight. Lucky guy, huh? Ugh.
